About the United States of America

In geographical terms, the “United States” includes the contiguous 48 states, Alaska, Hawaii, and several outlying territories. It shares land borders with Canada and Mexico and maritime borders with Russia, Cuba, The Bahamas, and other countries. The northern border with Canada is the world’s longest bi-national land border.

The total area of the U.S. has changed over the years, but it currently stands at around 9.8 million square kilometers. By total area, it’s the third or fourth-largest country, depending on factors like territorial claims and surface area calculations.

The U.S. has diverse geography, including temperate and subtropical forests, prairies, deserts, and mountains. Major features include the Great Lakes, the Rocky Mountains, the Mississippi River, and the Pacific Coast.

The climate varies widely, from subtropical in the South to polar in Alaska. The country experiences various weather phenomena like tornadoes, hurricanes, and droughts. The Pacific Ring of Fire makes the West Coast prone to earthquakes and volcanic activity.

Natural disasters like hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, earthquakes, and wildfires can have significant social and economic impacts, leading to forced displacements and population shifts in affected areas. For instance, hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana have led to significant population movements in recent years.
